昔は全然ピンと来なかった歌が、年を取ってからその味わいに気付く事がある。

和訳はこっちの方が好き。
これまで歌詞の意味を考えた事はなかったんだが、調べてみて、こんな意味だったんだ、と初めて知った。『失意の中で、ロスのピアノバーでピアノの弾き語りをしている時の経験を元にしてできた曲である』というのも、今初めて知った。昔なら解らなかっただろうが、いろいろと考えてしまう年齢になってしまった。

（勝手な意訳） ； 意訳には責任持ちませんので悪しからず。
Los Angelesのバーでピアノを弾いているPiano Man(Billy Joel)、
若い頃を懐かしむ老人からは「俺のmemory（昔の記憶）を演奏してくれ」と無茶ぶりされる。
ここから出ていけば映画スターになれる実力を持ちながらも、バーの店員をしている友人ジョン。
不動産屋で、奥さんの事は放ったらかしのポール。
酔いが回って行く客達に「孤独」と言う名の酒を飲ませるウェイトレス達。
でも、店で飲んでいる客の誰もみんな、一人で飲むよりはマシ。
土曜日にしては人の入りは上々。お客さん達は、みんなピアノを聞きながら、自分の人生を一瞬だけでも忘れようとして、店に来て酒を飲んでいる。
カーニバルのように盛り上がるピアノ。
演奏が終わり、チップを入れてくれるお客さん達は、
「（君自身は）ここで何をしているんだい？」と問いかけて来る。
